being with birds

On an afternoon walk, there were birds all around, and it looked like the slightest movement would drive them off. Standing still and listening, apart from their sounds, there are the sounds of their movements among the leaves all around… captured in audio/video to a little extent.

But there was a sense of gratitude in their trust they had in coming so close to us people, and their presence all around, that couldn’t be captured in any technology. Simply felt at that moment.

In general, it seems birds have some intuition…

There are examples of people, like St Francis of Assisi, who had a lot of affection for animals and birds. He liked to refer to them as his brothers and sisters. Legend says wild animals had no fear of him, and even came to him seeking refuge from harm. There are many accounts of Ramana Maharishi who lived in Tiruvunamalai, who conversed with different animals and birds, and at times fed them by hand. Ramana’s identity with everyone, including animals and birds, was so full and total. There are many instances as to how he was treated by other species as their own.

Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so.
